Adding more stuff to our home, when our goal is to keep things simple changes when it comes to Christmas. We have kids, who have their own ideas and wishes on what the holiday means. As a mom I love catering to them; from colored lights, hand drawn santa pictures taped to the fireplace, festive wrapping paper, and a mantle decorated a little different than I would do myself. It’s about creating a space together, throwing expectations out the window so it remains fun and stress free.
We chose to decorate with a real tree, garland and wreathes. Not only does this free up our home from clutter when the season is over, but it supports farmers. I’ve always loved using plants as decor and think we achieved a natural look that really warms up the space. I hope to collect items like candle stick holders, a table runner, a tree collar, and even an adorable candle carousel to round out some of the areas that are bare.
Our giving manger is front and center. Grey and Hollis are at such a great age to start this tradition and they absolutely love it.
My father in law was an excellent craftsman, we cherish two of the hand carved santa’s he created and display them proudly.
I fell In love with our santa stockings when Hollis was a baby. I went ahead and bought five incase we ever had a third child. Makes me laugh now, but happy that our dog will always fill that spot. This room gets amazing light even in the winter, but it’s still chilly. This throw is one of my only new purchases of the season.
My five year old picked out the flowers and the rest of what’s on the mantle. I can live with it, because it makes him so proud.
As a child we had a knit candy cane door bell that I vividly remember. I moved ours to the sunroom, as it was making our dog go crazy for how often we go in and out of the front door.
The mistletoe is my favorite addition this year. The doorway is narrow, but I’ve still snatched a few smooches when I’m standing close by in the kitchen. Happy Holidays from our family to yours.
